Senate Bill 618: Charter Schools and Cyber Schools - This bill is now before the state Senate education committee and would remove the cap on the number of charter schools in Michigan. Senate bill 619 passed the Senate and is in the House education committee, it would allow an unlimited number of “cyber schools” in Michigan (added 1/1/12)
At our last PTA meet we discussed legislation in the state house that would allow state money to flow to "cyber schools." The New York Times recently completed an investigation of cyber schools, the full article is at: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/13/education/online-schools-score-better-on-wall-street-than-in-classrooms.html?_r=1&hp The "cyber schools" themselves are garbage, but they are not designed to educate children. They are designed by Wall Street speculators to funnel tax dollars into private pockets. Elected officials, both Democratic and Republican, are slowly catching on to this swindle. Please contact our legislators and make sure they know we do not want to see our education dollars wasted on cyber schools.
