Graduation time is upon us once again and the power of a safe graduation is in the words you speak and the actions you take. As these times are thrilling they can also be tragic, The Royal Oak Community Coalition wants all of our children to come home safe. Below is the Knowledge is Prevention newsletter with a special message for our parents and the graduating class of 2010. Please read the ROCC Newsletter (pdf file) added 5.25.10

A personal note from your Webmaster: my son is graduating this year and he is my youngest so I will not be here next year. We need someone to take this web site over. Please contact PTSA President Janet Norling if you can help! Thanks to everyone who has supported my efforts to assist communication between home, school and PTSA over the last four years (and even longer in many cases). My life has been enriched through the many wonderful people and experiences PTSA has given me. I wish everyone the best! Madeleine (added 5.22.10)

Exciting news! Our PTSA newsletter, the Raven's Call, won the Newsletter of the Year award at the Michigan PTSA convention. Madeleine Taylor is our editor and has been for the past four years. Our newsletter is a valuable resource as it goes out to ALL parents. (The position is open if anyone is interested as Madeleine's youngest is graduating.)
The second award won by a very deserving member of our PTSA was state MEMBER OF THE YEAR, Madeleine Taylor! She has been making sure that the communication with the parents, teachers, administration and School Board is ever-present and has done newsletters and websites at the elementary, middle and high school levels. She has also acted as PTA Treasurer many times, in addition to many committees.
CONGRATULATIONS MADELEINE!
The state PTA of Indiana judged the Michigan awards.

Safe Routes to School
You might have heard that the Royal Oak School District will consider ending all general education bussing next year due to the budget crisis. As a consequence, many more parents will likely drive their kids to school next year.We already have traffic jams in front of most of our schools every morning. If we don't change anything, these traffic jams will be much worse and more dangerous next year.
There is an alternative--we could encourage more children to walk and ride their bicycles to school. It is healthier for the kids, relieves parents of stress, and benefits the environment. There is a state program called "Safe Routes to Schools" which exists to help schools plan ways to encourage students to walk and ride their bicycles to school, and to make that commute safe.
The state "Safe Routes to Schools" office is holding a free one-day training about the program in Royal Oak on Thursday, March 4th, at the YMCA on 11 Mile Road.Parents, teachers, school administrators would all learn from this event. Our superintendent (Dr. Tom Moline) has already registered to attend.
They are offering scholarships to cover the costs of substitute teachers--those will go fast.Encourage teachers who might be interested to apply now for a scholarship.
The link to register is at saferoutesmichigan.org/train3.htm (added 2.26.10)

State-wide Bake Sale for Public Education December 2, 2009 from 11am to 2pm
ROHS PTSA and the Michigan PTSA opposes the current cuts to education in Michigan
Join us at the Capitol on December 2, 2009 from 11 am to 2 pm as we make our voices heard.
- School budgets have been cut in every school district by a minimum of $292 per student!
- The $4,000 Michigan Promise Scholarship has been eliminated. Another promise broken!
- The State of Michigan is not living up to its responsibilities with these outrageous cuts!
- We cannot move forward if we leave today's students behind!
This is not a partisan issue, but a moral issue. We have a moral obligation to properly educate our children.
We're still working on the local location. The Tribune article was incorrect as the Hollywood on Campbell is Oak Ridge Elem PTA's location NOT ROHS and ROMS. And if you can get a full car and do the drive to the Capitol (front lawn, just look for PTA signs, Patti Andreski will be manning the RO PTA tables) the “bake sale” (must be prepackaged cookies not homebaked) will be from 11:00am until 2:00pm so there's time to get home to pick up the kids from school. If you would like to make your own sign that would be wonderful. We'll have flyers put together by the Michigan PTA to hand out at the local locations and in Lansing.
The important thing to remember is that we are demanding our legislators do something about funding public education! (added 11.29.09)

Emergency Notification System
It is important to be able to quickly notify parents and other concerned adults of District or school-wide emergencies.
A District-wide Emergency Notification System is now being used in the School District of the City of Royal Oak.
This telephone and email broadcast system, will notify parents/guardians of District or school-wide emergency situations such as snow days, school closures, unexpected transportation issues, etc.
The Emergency Notification System quickly and efficiently notifies parents with pointed and targeted messages via telephone and/or email contacts. It will be important that all Student Information forms are updated for accurate telephone and email contact information.
The Emergency Notification System will not be utilized for routine or regular communication. The contact information will not be shared or disclosed. Schools and classrooms will continue to communicate with families in other typical ways (phone calls, email, etc.).
Parents: To update your contact information, please use the Parent Web system, or contact the main office or your school. (added 9.29.09)
