Academic Awards - Recognition of academic achievements of members of the graduation class. The highest academic honors at Royal Oak are:

  • Summa Cum Laude      3.95-4.00 GPA
  • Magna Cum Laude        3.85-3.94 GPA
  • Cum Laude                  3.75-3.84 GPA
  • With Distinction            3.50-3.74 GPA
  • With Honors                 3.0 - 3.49 GPA

ACT (American College Test) - Is given 5 times a year, and is a college admissions test.  It is also the only way to qualify for a Michigan competitive scholarship and tuition grant.  However, students can take this test prior to their Junior year if they wish and can take it as many times as they want with the highest score being used for college admission.

Description of Grades - A=Excellent, B=Good, C=Average, D=Poor, E=Failure, W=Withdrawal, I-Incomplete (to convert an incomplete to a passing grade, all work must be finished before completion of the subsequent marking period), G=Credit, and H=No Credit.

Diploma Requirements - The minimum diploma requirement for students is 22 credits of successfully completed subjects distributed as follows:  5.0 credits communications; 5.0 credits mathematics and natural science; 4.0 credits social studies; 1.0 credit physical education, 2.0 credits school to career/foreign language and 5.0 credit elective choices.  These requirements are in accordance with the State Department of Education Guidelines and those of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges.

In addition, criteria may be established and approved by the high school principal and the division of instruction that would permit up to 1/2 credit toward graduation per year for the following:  work experience, travel (of an extended nature), foreign study projects, other areas of independent study, performing arts, the broad area of health and safety education, and N.C.A. approved correspondence courses.

Exams - Final exams are taken at the end of the first semester (mid-January) and the end of the second semester (June). Exams are usually taken over a three day period with two exams per day (in the a.m.).  The PTSA does offer drinks and snacks in the Old Commons between classes.  Lots of snacks are donated by parents and are free of charge to the students.  However, drinks and bagels/muffins are sold for a minimal cost.

Grade Point Average - To find your grade point average, add the point value of your marks per semester and divide by the total number of credits which have been taken during the semester.

Grade Point System - A=4 points   B=3 points   C=2 points   D=1 point   I,W,E,G.H=0 points

Honor Roll - Students with a 3.0 to 3.49 average qualify for the Honor Roll.  This list is posted and a letter is sent to the student.

Ninth Grade Citizenship Awards - Each marking period ninth graders who meet the following criteria are given a citizenship award:

  • Earn C's or above in all classes.
  • Earn a 3 or above in citizenship in every class.
  • Have an expectable attendance record.
  • Have no suspensions.

Principal's List - Students who complete a marking period with a 3.5 average or above qualify to be placed on the Principal's List.  The list is posted and a letter is sent to the student.

Progress Reports - Parents of students who are not doing well academically may request interim progress reports.  The request should be made through the Counseling Department. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend parent-teacher conferences in October and March and to call teachers at school.

PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) - May be taken by students in the fall of their junior year.  This test is the only means of qualifying for a National Merit Scholarship.  The scores on the PSAT are also a prediction of how students will do on the SAT.

PSAT/SAT/ACT Testing Dates/Times - See your student's counselor for dates and times or visit the web site at ACT.ORG.

Parent Web - Any parent can visit the Royal Oak Schools web site at royaloakschools.com and by clicking on the apple you can access your students’ records.  However, you must obtain an ID number and PIN number.  Forms are available in the Main Office, by e-mail at ParentWeb@royalaokschools.com or by contacting the Technical Assistant at ext. 203.

Report Cards - Are issued in six week intervals during the school year:  October (pick-up at conferences), November & January (distributed in school), March (pick-up at conferences), May and June (mailed).  Since all courses are semester courses, the grades recorded in both January and June are final semester grades and become part of the student's permanent record. Each course grade counts one half credit per semester toward the twenty-two required for graduation. Each of the three, six-week marking periods counts for 25% of the final grade.  The final exam counts for a maximum of 25% of the grade.

Retaking A Class - Students may repeat a semester or year long class with permission of their counselor or an administrator.  The higher grade earned by the student will be recorded on their transcript and the lower grade will be converted to an "H", which means no credit.  This does not apply to certain courses which may be repeated for additional credit such as band, choir, senate, reading skills, and composition.

SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) - Is given 5 times a year.  It also is a college admission test.  Seniors are advised to take the ACT or SAT in the fall.  Juniors may opt to take this in the spring of their junior year.  However, students can take this test prior to their Junior year if they wish and can take it as many times as they want with the highest score being used for college admission.
