INTERACT OF ROYAL OAK
Royal Oak High School's successful youth Rotary program recently completed several projects: Its annual UNICEF fundraiser raised thousands of dollars, one penny at a time. December found the group helping the ROHS staff with its own Secret Santa program. And in January, InterAct sponsored its first Hunger Banquet which raised money (over $300) and awareness to relieve hunger in America through Oxfam America. Participants at the Hunger Banquet received meals in keeping with the proportion of calories distributed around the world. One diner would receive a small amount of rice and “dirty water,” for instance, and be forced to sit next to another who received a full three-course meal complete with violin serenade! Interact speakers presented facts on hunger and moderated discussions about the exercise.
February Break finds InterAct and other interested students at ROHS busing to Galveston, Texas, to do a week of volunteerism only three months after Hurricane Ike devastated the island area. Nearly 70 students and seven chaperones (including teachers Steve Chisnell, Rick Pfeifle, Sean Morgan and superintendent Tom Moline) raised funds to make the trip happen, the second such annual trip for the group. Students will "rough it" by residing in an abandoned school while there (sleeping on floors). The trip, in association with Michigan's National Relief Network, will teach the students basic construction skills as well as show them first-hand the importance of community service to those in desperate need. More on this story when they return! More information: www,chisnell.com/interact.

Juniors: If you are interested in running for a senior class officer position, you may pick up a nominating petition from Mrs. Marek in room 220, before or after school. Petitions are due to Mrs. Marek by the end of the day on Monday, February 9. Candidates must have at least a cumulative 2.75 GPA, no discipline referrals the previous two semesters in any class, and no attendance failures the previous two semesters in any class. Positions are: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Historian, and Parliamentarian. (added 1/27/2009)
In an effort to save the cost of printing and the impact on the environment, we are going to send out a PDF copy of the PTSA Newsletter to any interested families. Also, the Parent Guide may be made available online. Please let me know if there is interest. There will still be enough paper copies printed to give to Freshmen and new families. Thank you. Madeleine (added 1/15/2009)

We hope to fill a bus at the credit union by the end of the month. The blankets will be donated to the Red Cross. Blankets or donations can be brought to Room 120. The students have drawn a bus located under the "light speed" box to encourage participation. (added 1.16.09)

JAMMING THE GYM on DECEMBER 18th!
Each of us knows somebody that has either died or been affected by cancer. My mother died of cancer almost four years ago and I will wear her name on the back of my pink
T-shirt at the Royal Oak High School basketball game on December 18th to honor her.
Wouldn’t it be great to show all those we care about JAMMING THE GYM on December 18th at the basketball game in PINK shirts. Each shirt will carry the name of the person who has dealt with cancer, living or deceased that is special to you. Please see t-shirt order form (pdf file). Orders are due by December 2nd.
Can you imagine what Royal Oak High Schools gym will look like if most of the students and community wear that special, pink shirt! We could be talking thousands, all joining together with the common cause of helping people with cancer through their participation and GILDA’S CLUB in Royal Oak.
There will also be raffles at half time, we are hoping for donations of gaming stations, I-pods, and possibly more! All proceeds go to GILDA’S CLUB!
Please join this worthwhile effort to honor your special person and help others!
Sincerely,
Mr. Terry Powers Teacher and Coach, Royal Oak High School

ROHS Welcomes German Students - We will be welcoming nineteen exchange students from Germany arriving on October 14th until October 31st. Two teachers are also coming. A few outings are planned with the entire group including a potluck welcome dinner and Halloween farewell party while the rest is up to the host families. Mr. Greening is hosting a welcome breakfast. The Germans, as the kids call them, are here to experience the life of an American teenager. They are visiting the classes throughout the day and also will be visiting Henry Ford, Greenfield Village as well as the Zoo. A trip to Cedar Point is also being planned. The German students are attending a school board meeting, since the school board had approved the GAPP visit. The German students will also be here for Homecoming.
Our kids will spend a month in Germany in the summer of 2009. They will stay with the same student that they are hosting here for two weeks.

The PTSA is encouraging all students, staff, parents, student clubs, sport teams, and staff groups to consider “adopting” a “green” space in or about the school grounds. This would include periodic weeding, litter pick-up; and in some cases, planting of the adopted area. The PTSA is working with Principal Greening and other interested people to come up with a coordinated effort to “spruce-up” our school. Please email Jeff Knaggs, hufkna@gmail.com, for further information or to volunteer. Individual volunteer work, even 1 hour per year, can make a huge difference on making the school and grounds look great all the time.
