Royal Oak High School Editor Jillian Rodriguez Receives National Journalism Award
ROYAL OAK, MI. - Royal Oak High School Acorn Editor in Chief Jillian Rodriguez has received the Al Neuharth Free Spirit Award, a distinction awarded to top student journalists throughout the United States. The Free Spirit Award is given to 102 high school seniors across the country (a male and female from each state and the District of Columbia), who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism and who demonstrate qualities of "free spirit". "Free spirits dream, dare and do. A free spirit can also be a risk-taker, a visionary, an innovative leader, an entrepreneur, or a courageous achiever who accomplishes great things beyond his or her normal circumstances," according to Neuharth.
In addition to her work as editor of Acorn, Jillian also writes the Daily Tribune column "Student Voices" on behalf of the Save Our Youth Task Force.
This program began in 1999 and is funded by the Freedom Forum to honor Al Neuharth, the founder of USA TODAY and the Freedom Forum. Jillian will attend a conference in Washington D.C. March 16 -20, where she will meet the other recipients and attend informative sessions with prominent media professionals. "This is an excellent opportunity for Jillian, and is certainly a positive reflection on our publications program and our school," said Ann Maudlin, Royal Oak High School Language Arts Teacher and Acorn Newsmagazine Adviser.

103,150 Scholarships Awarded to Royal Oak Middle and High School Fine Arts Students
The Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp presented $103,150 scholarship awards to 209 Royal Oak High School and Middle School students. High school scholarships totaling $13,390 were awarded to 31 students and scholarships of $89,760 were given to 178 middle school students.
Scholarship auditions were conducted over three days in December by William Tennant, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Representative. Band, orchestra, vocal music, art and drama students participated. Art students shared a small portfolio of their work, drama students performed an interpretive reading, and instrumental musicians played a short selection of their choice.
"This is a significant sum of money that our students have been awarded," said Janet Von Eberstein, Royal Oak Middle School District Music Coordinator. "We are indeed proud of their hard work and dedication and the strength of the fine arts programs in our District."
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp is a summer school of the arts located on a 1,300 acre campus in Michigan's Manistee National Forest. The summer camp annually serves more than 5,000 gifted elementary, junior high, and high school students with diverse programs in music, art, dance, and drama while offering more than 175 performances during its Summer Arts Festival. Since its inception in 1966, Blue Lake has provided cultural enrichment to over 300,000 gifted students and countless concert-goers. http://www.bluelake.org/

Royal Oak Model UN Earns Top Honors at UMMUN 2008
The Royal Oak High School's Model United Nations Team (ROMUN) earned high honors at the University of Michigan Model UN conference in Ann Arbor, including a first place "Best School" award, the highest award at the conference.
The team's Sudan delegation was the top award winner, with a Best Delegate award going to sophomore KL for her solid four days of debate in the World Health Organization. Sudan's MA (senior) and GE (junior) each earned awards in the Disarmament and Economic committees.
In special committees, all three of Royal Oak's senior delegates earned awards. Representing Canada, AH earned a Best Delegate award; she helped bring about Mid-East peace in a historical debate on the 1967 Arab-Israel war. AG, representing the United Kingdom, earned Honorable Mention in the Security Council debating Somalia stability and biochemical terrorism in China. NC represented Denmark and earned Verbal Commendation for his historical restructuring of the United Nations in 1945.
In addition, senior ZH, representing Iran, earned Honorable Mention alongside Adams for his debate on Darfur and Iraqi disarmament. Senior CP earned Verbal Commendation for his work as Argentina in the same committee.
The team debated difficult topics, from E's external debt relief programs to L's debate on helping children with HIV. Other topics included human rights abuses by multi-national corporations, religious intolerance (for which junior CK and sophomore MS authored resolutions), and North Korea development (where junior GR authored several resolutions).
So many awards across so many committees helped the team earn the Best School award, the top award at the conference.
"But it just wasn't these award winners who did it," said Alec Snyder, one of team's advisors. The team award is shared by the students whose work impressed the UMMUN staff at every level, from the writing of position papers before the conference to caucus and speech skills and policy-building.
The students returned from the four day conference on Sunday and then continued studying for their mid-term exams this week. The ROMUN competition team is an extra-curricular for the students; they debate and research on their own time, including-for this conference-the December holiday.
"The group is driven," said Steve Chisnell, one of the team's advisors. "They don't want just to win an argument: they want to solve the problem."
In all the team took 26 delegates to the conference representing six different nations. Nearly 500 students from 20 schools in the Midwest competed at the UMMUN conference.
The Royal Oak Model UN team numbers nearly 50 students this year from the new high school campus. The team is preparing for an upcoming conference at Michigan State University in March and an advocacy trip to China this summer.
