ROHS PTSA Meeting UNAPPROVED Minutes from January 22, 2007

6:30 p.m.

  1. Meeting called to order at 6:42 p.m.
  2. Approval of minutes from 11-27-2006 meeting-motion to accept as presented by Libby Benton, 2nd by Carole Mason, vote taken, motion passed
  3. Teacher Report-Not present
  4. Student Report-Not present
  5. Principal Report-Michael Greening
    • Tom Neville, former ROHS/Kimball Principal sends his best.
    • Date change for Parent/Teacher conferences from 3/22/07 to 3/21/07
    • Introduced Jeff Birkett & Travis Beard of Worry Free Inc. who are former Kimball graduates who are helping with the landscaping designs for our grounds to begin in Spring.  They are also responsible for planting of the Oak Tree in the front of the school
    • The administrative staff is committed to improving communication both inside the HS and outside
  6. School Board Liaison-Chris Hartwig
    • School aid fund short at the state level by $1.2 million dollars.  There will be a shortage and a necessity for RO to use some of their fund equity to make sure that we do not have to make mid year cuts to staff or programs
    • Swing Dance Fundraiser held to help support the WPA Mural fund, Honor Flight and the RO Historical Society; to be held on 2-10-07 from 7-11 pm at Churchill Community HS.  Cost is $30 a person/$15 Student or $50 a couple
  7. Committee Reports:
    • Membership-Libby Benton: we currently have 725 members, need more
    • Student Directory/Parent Guide-Libby Benton: sent home w/students in December
    • Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair-Mary Dixon: Will hold on November 17, 2007, Mary will chair but needs more help. Mena Murray spoke regarding this year’s fair and the fact that Jim George donated his nacho chips/cheese when the fair food committee ran out and that something special should be done…Bette Wendland moved to donate $25 to Jim George and a special thank you, 2nd by Jeanne Dolson, vote taken-motion passed
    • Senior All Night Party-Judy Ahn-Ewing: need help with additional fund raising-have a budget of between $7500-$10,000 to make this an outstanding event. If you can help with donations of goods, services or just plain cash, please let the committee know
    • Exam Snacks-Audrey Durnion: Tues, Wed, Thurs of exam week went well, made $23
    • Newsletter-Cindy Murphy: our last issue when out last Thursday, next deadline is 1-27-07. Seem to be having a problem with some communication issues between Cindy and ROHS contact person; Candy, Cindy and Michael Greening to look into
    • Founder’s Day-Carole Mason: 2-5-07 at San Marino Club with social hour from 6-7 and dinner being served at 7 pm. Cost is $25
    • Reflections-Not present
    • Teacher Report by Mr. John Decker-Co-Advisor of Student Council
      • 3-16-07 volleyball marathon
      • 2-16-07 General Elections for Student Council, there will be 8 representatives from each class; 4 elected and 4 appointed (appointees must have run in the general elections)
  8. Treasurer’s Report-Madeleine Taylor
    • $227.98 bill from Detroit Popcorn company received from the last blast at Dondero HS in June 2006; Madeleine advised would need to do line item to pay bill; discussion took place with Mary DeYoung-Smith and Patti Andreski advising the membership that this was a paid bill, by former DHS Principal Bridgett Schipper on that day of the last blast.  Madeleine tabled motion and will investigate with school district
  9. President’s Report-Candy Ather-Putman
    • Thank you to Mr. Greening for his assistance and willingness to work with the PTSA on make ROHS a fantastic place to learn and grow
    • ACT test will be administered here at ROHS for Juniors and will involve freshman, sophomores and seniors being out of the building, communication is imperative to the parents, Mr. Greening and Candy to make sure this happens
    • Al Carter was named police liaison from the RO Police Department and will be onsite here at ROHS
    • Junior Parent Meeting to take place following this meeting tonight at 7:30 pm
    • March 20th & March 21st will be Challenge Day here at ROHS and will involve 100 students per day
    • MI PTSA Convention to be held May 3-May 5 here in Sterling Hts
    • RO Youth Assistance fundraiser at Thunderbird Lanes on 2-11-07, does ROHS want to sponsor lane for $100.Motion by Cindy Murphy to sponsor a lane for $100 for RO Youth Assistance Fundraiser, 2nd by Jeanne Dolson, vote taken-motion passed
    • History & Accomplishment Committee will be sponsoring a sale on 2-3-07 from 12-4 at Churchill to sell excess items
  10. Unfinished Business: None
  11. New Business-
    • Royal Oak Community Coalition has completed the risk factors survey with all 6-8-10-12 graders, results will be available in March
    • 2-9-07 is Dialog Day at Churchill Community HS and our State Board of Education will be visiting.
    • Parents Who Host, Loose the Most-need help getting the word out on issues involving parents holding parties at hotels or homes and the consequences that can arise
    • ROHS Boosters-Comedy Roast of Brian Gordon to be held at Riddley’s Comedy Castle on 2-1-07, cost is $20
    • Teen Night at Churchill for 7th&8th graders on the first Friday of each month from 7-9 pm; need chaperones- If there are service clubs that need to fulfill volunteer hours, this might be perfect, for more information see Bette Wendland
    • Jeanne Dolson spoke on Spectrum Concert on 2-1-07 at 7pm
    • MIFVA Local festival to be held here at ROHS on 1-26-07
